Payroll Spain: the challenges

In Spain, the statutory minimum wage (Salario Mínimo Interprofesional – SMI) in 2024 is €1,134 per month based on 14 payments per year. This amounts to €1,323 per month if paid in 12 installments per year. Many employers follow the 14-payment system, where employees receive an extra month’s salary in June and December. This differs from other European countries such as the Netherlands, where salaries are typically paid in 12 monthly installments.

Salary payment and tax filing

Salaries in Spain are typically paid monthly, but many companies use a 14-payments-per-year system, where employees receive an extra month’s salary in June and December.

Income tax (IRPF) is withheld by the employer and remitted to the tax authorities on a monthly basis. The amount withheld varies depending on the employee’s salary and personal tax situation.

Leave regulations and public holidays

Employees in Spain are entitled to 30 calendar days (approximately 22 working days) of paid annual leave per year, excluding national and regional public holidays.

Spain has 14 official public holidays per year, of which 8 are national, while the remaining vary by region or municipality. This means that leave and public holidays depend on the autonomous region where an employee works.

These organizations are deploying AFAS internationally:

“Salure helped tremendously in paying salaries with AFAS. The team was always there for us so that everything went well with payroll processing. Even when we needed last-minute help, time was found to be able to help us.”

Sjoerd Minnema

Project and change manager at Move Beyond for Landal GreenParks

“It’s reassuring to know that Salure can support us with every idea we come up with. They’re also very honest when something isn’t possible or needs to be done differently. We can then brainstorm together. In this respect, too, Salure is a great partner. We really appreciate that.”

Soyana Mooren

HR manager at KFC franchisee Collins Foods

“Payroll processing is a profession in its own right. You have to put professionals with the right knowledge on it. Especially if you want to guarantee the continuity of the department. You are vulnerable if only one person is responsible for the entire payroll processing. That is why we have been outsourcing this to Salure since 2020. Salure really thinks along with you and looks beyond the standard of AFAS. You are heard as a customer and that gives confidence.”

Anneke Staal

Head of P&O at Museum Boijmans van Beuningen

“Salure does payroll processing for us. Always nice to be able to turn to a professional with questions and to have them do an audit of our records! We have a pleasant cooperation!”
